Cool Kids Of The Soil

Giving props and love to the young Africans who are changing their country via artistic, photographic, and other creative endeavours. My top 5 favourites are these!
In my eyes, Kenya stands as one of the most creatively vibrant nations on the continent. From its bold cultural expression to the richness of its traditions, everything feels alive. Even its flag carries a powerful sense of identity. And the people? Kenyan women, in particular, carry a beauty that’s impossible to ignore—their glowing complexions, natural hair, and melodic accents that linger long after they’ve spoken.
Yes, I’m completely captivated—and I won’t even pretend otherwise.
At the heart of this admiration is the work of Sweeney Queen, a visual storyteller with an exceptional artistic eye. Through her lens, she captures more than just images—she captures life. Her photography reflects everyday moments across Kenya and East Africa, translating them into stories filled with love, struggle, hope, and resilience.
The vibrant beadwork, rich fabrics, and bold colours of Kenyan culture come alive in her images. She doesn’t just document beauty—she celebrates it. Through her perspective, Africa is not a place to be explained, but a story to be felt.
And I have to admit—seeing her work has only deepened my desire to experience Kenya for myself.
Ghana: People of the Coast
If Kenya is colour, then Ghana is soul.
There’s a warmth that radiates from the streets of Accra—a richness in the deep, dark skin tones that feels both powerful and grounding. Ghana carries history, pride, and identity in a way that’s both quiet and loud at the same time.
Prince Gyasi is one of the voices bringing that story to life.
Through his work, he paints Ghana in bold, striking hues—celebrating the everyday lives of its people with a sense of pride that feels intentional. His art doesn’t shy away from identity; it amplifies it.
He captures the coast not just as a place, but as a living, breathing narrative. Through him, Ghana isn’t just seen—it’s understood.
And honestly? I love everything about his work. The talent, the vision, the storytelling—it’s all there.
Zambia ~ The real Africa
Zambia feels like a quiet truth.
Often described as “the real Africa,” it carries culture in its purest form—from language to tradition to everyday life. There’s a calmness to it, a kind of grounded beauty that doesn’t try too hard—and doesn’t need to.
One place that continues to call my name is Mosi-oa-Tunya—a natural wonder that sits high on my ever-growing travel list.
It’s easily one of the trendiest countries on the continent—a powerhouse of music, fashion, food, and film. From Afrobeats to Nollywood, Nigeria knows how to lead—and the world follows.
Enter Lord Kpuri—a contemporary artist and writer who isn’t afraid to take risks.
And beyond the visuals, he tells stories—especially about love. The messy, complicated, sometimes painful kind we all try to avoid… yet somehow always find.
Home.
There’s something deeply personal about South Africa—a mix of history, resilience, and pride that shapes everything. It’s not just a place; it’s a feeling.
And if you don’t believe it’s one of the greatest countries in the world… maybe it’s time you came and saw for yourself.
Ndumiso Nyoni is one of many creatives carrying the culture forward. Through his art, he tells stories that are bold, relevant, and rooted in identity.
His work reflects a generation that is no longer waiting to be defined—but is defining itself.
Power to the Storytellers
There has never been a more powerful time to be part of this cultural wave—to witness Africans telling their own stories, in their own voices, through their own lenses.
For so long, the story of the lion was told by the hunter.
Not anymore.
Today, the children of the soil are reclaiming the narrative—preserving culture, celebrating identity, and showing the world Africa as it truly is: diverse, complex, and undeniably beautiful.
And for that, I’m grateful.
Always.
