Chapter One

The romance between Uche and Zamalethu

There once lived a young woman named Zamalethu in Africa. She was a stunning young woman who lived in a wonderful village called Kasi wethu (Village). One day, Zamalethu met a wonderful young man named Uche, who asked for her hand in marriage. Zamalethu was overjoyed to accept his proposal because he was the strongest, most attractive, and best hunter in all of Muzi, and he was obviously deserving of a girl like herself.

This is how Zamalethu and Uche met at the river where Zamalethu went with her two friends, Oge and Karabo, to gather water for drinking, cooking, and washing.

Do you not think that the water is cooler than usual?
Zamalethu asked her two friends, Oge and Karabo. Oge was the honest, no-filter girl who got right to the point, while Karabo was the kind, gentle country sweetheart. Zamalethu balanced the group by combining elements of each.
"I believe it's because it's a little chilly today," Oge said, floating on Karabo's shoulder and testing the water with her left leg.

"I concur," Karabo said.
The village looked up to Uche because of his extraordinary strength and power, as well as his bravery. One day, while out hunting, he heard what he thought was the most beautiful voice in the village. The closer he went, the more he heard the voice, and eventually, he saw three gorgeous girls, but he came for only one. He called out to them from across the river, nearly shouting, "Hello, amatombazani (girls)" and adding, "Bwino" (fine).

Zamalethu, like all the other girls in the village, knew who the attractive warrior was, therefore they responded simultaneously while carrying buckets of water. We certainly look like magic, but this isn't heaven, the girls chuckled. "I'm looking for the one with a voice of an angel," he paused, realizing how sad that sounded. Zamalethu pinched Oge and gave her a pop of the eyes. Uche remained motionless, unsure of who it could be, but he had a gut feeling that it was the girl with the short, curling black hair,  Her attractive features—brown eyes, full lips, and hips—acquired him right away. The girls placed the buckets on their heads and began to walk away. At this point, he became afraid that he might not see the girl who had the angel's voice, so he made the decision to follow his intuition. "Hey you, the girl with the short hair," Zamalethu said, and she instantly responded in the affirmative.

Excited, he ran across the river to where she was. Zamalethu and her friends stood motionless, their buckets in their heads and their faces drenched from the water that spilled into them.

She was devastated to see him holding her bucket when he removed it from her head and asked if he could assist her carry it home. Oge and Karabo moved straight ahead of them while the two strolled gently and chatted.
I sound like an angel, then? Zamalethu blushed and said, "Not even, an angel would be jealous of you." He smiled at her and she smiled back, convincing Zamalethu that he was worthy of going for a stroll.

"It's what I love to do, thank you," he replied, "I have only seen you at ceremonies, you are always the best." He was not unknown. When they got to Zamalethu's house, her mother was raking the yard. Following Zamalethu's request, Uche placed the bucket where she had asked, knelt down, and greeted her mother. She thanked him for his assistance. Zamalethu eagerly awaited telling her companions what had occurred to her as she stood back and watched him go.
Uche and Zamalethu fell in love right away, and they treasured their long walks to the market and river.

Uche, carrying a basket full of fresh fruits and vegetables, reached out for a mango and gave it to Zamalethu. She was very flirtatious with him for carrying her basket and now offering her a fruit. "Oh how sweet of you," she said, looking down. "You're welcome," he replied, and they both smiled while glancing in different directions.

Uche was prepared to make the lovely feeling linger forever as Zamalethu and Uche's love evolved into something amazing. He told his family about his plans with Zamalethu six months later, and they were happy with his decision because they cherished and loved her. In order to approach Zamalethu and request his hand in marriage, Uche and his family got ready.
